Well, Lance is back at it again.
Lance who? Of course, none other than the venrable Lance Armstrong who is the worlds’ cycling equivalent of Michael Jordan. Lance is to bicycles what Dale Ernhardt is to race cars.
Why the re-emergence? According to the 36 year ole Armstrong in a formal statement Armstrong based his decision to return to competition cycling as an effort to revitalize global awareness to fight cancer. But surely it is not just about making people aware of cancer; what about money and placing yourself back into the international limelight that you relished in for so long.
After winning seven races at the Tour de France what, in all actuality, will winning your eighth actually accomplish? Personal satisfaction? Wheting the competitive appetite? It is rumored around the cycling circles that Lance will be receiving a nice chunk of change from Bikes for wither riding a bike designed by them or through some other sponsorship/endorsement arrangment.
There are also the voices that attribute Lance’s return as a way to “silence” the critics of his alleged performance enhancing substance use. Of course, Lance and his proponents have vehemently denied that Lance has ever used such substances but there allegedly is substantial proof that was never allowed to come to life that he dd. in fact, partake in some type of banned substance. Lance has also allegedly hired a a vidoe crew to chronicle his training for 2009 every step of the way as he mounts his comeback. This video chronicalization is supposed to also make record of his drug test, of which some say really contributes to his possible guilt. Clean or not, it is going to be interesting to see just how far Lance can take this and for whatever reason he is doing this, more power to him.
Another point that needs to be considered is what the competition thinks about Lance returning. Admittedly, the sport has been very lackluster without his involvement and outside of the French and real cycling enthusiasts who really thinks about competition cycling? If I were one of the riders riding against Lance I would have cause to fear, in light of Lance’s fierce competitive spirit, however, there is no way I would allow a soon to be 37 year old to beat me when I am at the pinnacle of my performance.
By the same token, isn’t there another way that Lance can make people more aware of cancer? Even though Lance is to cycling what Jordan is to basketball, I would likewise hate to see Lance go out like Jordan: falling off of his bicycle and bringing up the rear in races like Jordan was getting dunked on and being subjected to ankle-breaking cross overs. Please Lance , take a page out of John Elways’ book –

Visit the local bike shops and get fitted. Also take a look at Fuji, Giant, Specialized, Jamis, and a few others. Look for something local on ebay or Craig’s list, it’s a pain to to pack up a bike and ship it.
